The earliest log cabins and barns were built with trees from the forest.

The kitchen with its fireplace was probably the most important room in a log cabin. A large stone fireplace in the kitchen was important for heating, lighting and cooking for the household.

After a saw mill was set up in the community, a plank wood house could be built. It usually was a 2 storey, much larger house.
Some houses were finished with stucco or brick.
