All programs are based on the Ontario curriculum for Social Studies, History and Geography.

Enjoy a combination of the Many Hands program and a guided tour of the historic village. Students will engage in practical, everyday, household activities such as baking, woodworking, weaving and spinning. The students will also have a chance to explore the village with an informative guided tour.

A new program that examines the many changes underway around the time of Confederation. This tour looks at the contributions of women, children, religious and ethnic minorities. Issues such as temperance, education, voting rights and social life are explored. An exciting and fun comparison of Canadian society then and now. This program is specifically designed to engage the interests of early teens.

A new program focusing on school life in old Ontario. Students will wear aprons and vests, and participate in the classroom routine of the 1860's. Activities such as spelling bees and working on slate boards will teach children about students lives in a farming community.

This program is an ideal introduction to the village. There is an opportunity to visit a number of the buildings which illustrate the many facets of community life in the 19th century. This program will be focused on the level and the interest of the group. |

Lifestyles of the pioneers are explored in this participatory program using the tools, methods and recipes which were commonplace on a 19th century farm. Daily routines and the roles of various individuals are discovered while performing activities relating to the home and workshop. Students have the opportunity to bake, spin, weave and do wood working. Sampling the baked goods is always a great reward for the work involved!!

Discover the variety of ways in which settlers used natural resources such as trees, water and the land. Explore the use of these resources in various living history demonstrations at the village. You will be amazed at the number of ways the settlers recycled or reused their materials. Enjoy an exciting opportunity to learn about the environment in a historical setting. |

A program that explores the similarities and differences in the life of a child in the 1860's with life today. Tour the village and see what kept children busy in Victorian times. Participants may have the chance to try on period clothes and play games from the past. |

Children have an opportunity to practice a few of the household chores of the time in a log farm house. Laundry, carding sheep’s fleece and rug braiding are some of the “hands-on” opportunities provided. Make and eat a small snack as reward for helping with the chores! |

A program to answer the question, How did they do that? Students will have the opportunity to participate in our hands on centre, where they can build a log cabin, a bucket or work on a giant loom. The guided tour continues in the village to relate these skills to the actual buildings and trades of the 1860's.

Journey back and discover the challenges facing early settlers in the new land. Get a glimpse of what immigrants faced and how they worked together to survive and make their communities grow. This tour is an opportunity to learn about economic and social issues, and settlement patterns.

1837 Rebellion |

Explore the sources of conflict leading up to the 1837 Rebellion in Upper Canada. Students interact with staff, who interpret the impact of the rebellion on ordinary people in an 1860's community. The program culminates with a Town Hall meeting, where students use their knowledge and observations to dramatize the feelings, struggles and pursuits of the community.

Traditions and celebrations of the different cultures that made up the village provide a very special Christmas time. Scottish, Irish, British and Pennsylvania German influences can be seen in a traditional setting of 19th century homes, shops and community meeting places. The excitement of the coming celebration abounds in the crossroads village. Activities enable the students to participate in the spirt of the season-doing it the way our ancestors did!

This program is designed around toys common in the 19th century. Students have an opportunity to play with reproductions of pioneer toys. Participating in games, stories and the creation of a simple toy add to the fun and excitement of this special interactive program.

Step back in time and spend a week role playing with your students in a one room school house. Teacher orientation is provided, as well as scheduled daily activities to many of the restored buildings. Groups are encouraged to dress as citizens of the 1860's and conduct lessons with materials appropriate to the time.
